OWL is also known for its universities. With its different types of higher education institutions – university, university of applied sciences and arts, university of music – Campus OWL reaches around 65,000 students with over 500 courses of study at its locations in Bielefeld, Detmold, Gütersloh, Höxter, Lemgo, Minden and Paderborn, covering the entire academic spectrum. The universities are also known nationally and internationally for their cutting-edge research. The cooperation of the universities with a wide variety of high-performing companies thus makes the OWL region an important business and research location.
All of the OWL universities are focused on creating and fostering global exchange with an array of partner institutions, many of them in the United States. For this reason, the five universities are represented by their own liaison office in New York City.
The Campus OWL New York office is developing transatlantic relations and partnerships, and connecting people from OWL, Canada, and the US on every academic level. The aim is to bring people together in research, education, and exchange. Networking events create room for new connections and workshops in fields like the future of work, intelligent technical systems, artificial intelligence, urban health, among other topics, interlacing the scientific community of NRW and the US.
One example of this very successful bridge between the United States and NRW is the Professional Experience Program (PEP) that lets students from OWL experience the American life and work culture in a 3-month internship in the United States. This intercultural experience showcases how both nations work together to foster understanding and support partnerships between NRW and the United States.
