As a dialogue platform and network organization, we bring together diverse stakeholders from both sides of the Atlantic. We facilitate an open, constructive, and critical exchange on topics that concern the USA and Germany, promoting transatlantic understanding. From the “Window to America” to the German-American Exchange and Meeting Place

Originally opened in 1955 as a cultural and information center of the United States, the Amerika Haus Köln served as the “Window to America” for over 50 years: Especially in its early years, it filled a cultural gap in the city’s life with concerts, lectures, exhibitions, film and theater performances, and its own library. Together with other Amerika Häuser, it contributed to the rebuilding of democratic education in Germany after World War II.

As a successor institution, the AmerikaHaus NRW e.V. was founded in 2007 on the initiative of Jeane Freifrau von Oppenheim, then Mayor Fritz Schramma of Cologne, and former U.S. Consul General Matthew G. Boyse. The organization is now active throughout the state with a diverse program covering current transatlantic topics. Funding comes from both public and private sources, with major support from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Federal Foreign Office, the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, and the city of Cologne. Additionally, we receive support from various municipalities in NRW, businesses, and individuals. We are a member of the Association of German-American Centers e.V.
