The University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) is an alliance of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, TU Dortmund University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen – three of the largest universities in Germany’s thriving Ruhr region. The UA Ruhr Liaison Office in New York City represents these three universities in North America. The organization was founded in 2004 under the name ConRuhr (Consortium of the Ruhr Area Universities) which then changed its name to University Alliance Ruhr. It is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the United States tax code and is supported through contributions by the three Ruhr Universities.
Our main mission in North America is to facilitate and promote innovative transatlantic collaborations in research and education between our universities – TU Dortmund University, Ruhr University Bochum and University Duisburg Essen – and partners in North America. Our North American liaison office enhances and expands cutting-edge international research and education opportunities for researchers and students and their collaborating partners to assist in extending programs throughout the Ruhr region and in our region; ultimately helping them develop solutions for global challenges and cooperation. That is why University Alliance Ruhr established two fellowship programs that enable a special exchange between the Ruhr area in Germany and different locations in the United States. We select two cohorts of high performing students and give them the once in a lifetime opportunity to gain cultural and professional experience in the corresponding region.
The Ruhr Fellowship Program connects highly motivated undergraduate students in the United States with a unique experience to expand their portfolio and networks to one of the most dynamic and technologically advanced areas in Germany. As Germany’s “Cradle of Industry”, the Ruhr Area has come to represent creativity and innovation with its internationally renowned companies, universities, and research institutes. We accept applications by students who are enrolled in our 9 partner institutions: Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, University of California Berkeley, Lehigh University, Purdue University, Rutgers the State University of New Jersey.

2023 Cohort of the Transatlantic Ruhr Fellowship Program
The Transatlantic Ruhr Fellowship Program provides highly motivated and high performing students from the University Alliance Ruhr institutions with a unique experience to expand their portfolio and networks to New York’s tristate area – the center of many industries such as finance, international trade, biotechnology, manufacturing, and media. We partner with organizations that are connected to Germany to widen the experience and networks of our fellows. The fellows also participate in a week-long skills training program at our partner university, Lehigh University – where they are trained in fundamentals of Design Thinking, and other soft-skills necessary to succeed in their professional careers.
