Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the coordinators responsible for implementing the internationalization strategy, the University of Wuppertal now boasts nine strong university partnerships with American universities. The main objectives are the exchange of students and researchers, which drives diverse educational paths and enables the realization of research projects, as well as fostering cultural exchange among institution members.
The cooperation with Bethel College in Kansas holds special significance, as it was initiated by the Pedagogical University as a precursor institution to the university founded in 1972. It has been active and continuous for almost 75 years. It even led to the establishment of the “Friends of Bethel College Association,” which supports student exchange. The collaborations born from Prof. Gert Trauernicht’s Industrial Design program at BUW with the College for Creative Studies in Detroit (Michigan) and the University of Cincinnati (Ohio) have been running successfully for many years. They are characterized by an interdisciplinary nature and a close connection to various industrial partners.
The formalized partnership with the renowned Florida State University in Tallahassee (FSU) has been in place since 2015. The foundation for this successful collaboration was laid by Prof. Dr. Ralph Radach from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, who established valuable contacts with colleagues on-site during a guest professorship. With over 40,000 students, FSU is the largest university in the USA with which the University of Wuppertal maintains cooperation.
Individual research collaborations are also of great importance to the University of Wuppertal; for example, there is a collaboration with the renowned NASA Glenn Research Center in Ohio, as well as with Columbia University in New York State. These research contacts have led to various presentations at international conferences and joint scientific publications, supported by the DFG and other funding agencies.
The International Office team and the Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Gust, are working to expand the partnerships and are always available for organizing new collaborations.
