International Transportation Innovations Summit – PEDAL in Fresno

With Münster being the cycling capital of Germany, the conference focused on the integration of cycling into the comprehensive urban mobility concept. Fresno, as the fifth-largest city in California and soon to be connected to the first high-speed rail line in the entire USA (LA-Fresno-San Francisco), placed great importance on the exchange of ideas regarding public local and long-distance transportation, e-mobility, traffic safety, and shared-mobility concepts. Guest speakers from Dubai, Toronto, and California provided valuable insights for the expert forums that took place on various topics. Münster actively participated in the intensive discussion rounds with contributions from representatives of the city, FH & University of Münster, IHK Nord Westfalen, and the traffic police. Guided bike tours through the city center and the surrounding areas were used to illustrate the implementation of traffic infrastructure and safety in Fresno. As a highlight, three new bicycle sculptures were presented, promoting cycling in the city center and symbolizing the sister-city partnership with Münster.

As part of the conference, outstanding mobility projects were honored, along with individuals who are particularly committed to sustainable urban mobility. Münster is pleased to receive recognition for the projects “Velo Routes” in the “Safety Project” category and “Expansion of the Canal Promenade” in the “Active Transportation Project” category.

Mayor Lynne Ashbeck, the mayor of Fresno’s neighboring city Clovis, moderated the Panel of Mayors – a discussion with the mayors of Fresno, Münster, Enschede, and Rochester (MN), as well as expert Gil Peñalosa from Toronto. Peñalosa is an advocate for transforming cities worldwide into livable spaces for people of all ages and life circumstances. Mobility in terms of climate protection, demographic change, socio-economic changes, and health and safety aspects must be reconsidered. The global challenges are the same for everyone. In international exchange, cities can learn from each other and cooperate.

Mayor Angela Stähler expressed her gratitude to Vice Mayor Marc Teutelink of Enschede (NL partner city) and Mayor Kim Norton of Rochester (US climate partner city) for supporting the transatlantic “urban diplomacy exchange” and summarized: “Sustainable urban development is equally important to all of us. It is our responsibility to ensure that our cities are sustainable and livable for future generations.” Warm regards from Mayor Markus Lewe were conveyed by Angela Stähler via video message. In August, Mayor Jerry Dyer visited Münster and, along with US Consul General Pauline Kao, joined the invitation of the Lord Mayor for an eventful bike tour through Münster: https://vimeo.com/870801207/f454b7e51b
