With regard to the talents, Pauline Kao says: “The two-hour exchange with these young people was simply incredibly interesting for me. It gave me so much energy to meet these young talents from different cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. I was particularly inspired by their openness and enthusiasm. They were so interested in everything I had to say and in what defines us as a society. That gave me a lot of hope for the future. If everyone gets involved in society with so much commitment, then the future can only get better. One thing is certain for me: I will never forget this day!”
Co-operation schools of the TalentKolleg from Gelsenkirchen also took up the opportunity to attend the event with senior English classes. Lisa Ovelhey, English teacher at Grillo-Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen: “The event was a valuable addition to our school lessons. The students were able to apply what we do in class in a very practical way – in a special setting and with an extraordinary dialogue partner.”
In the “Talents meet…” event series, young people get to talk to outstanding personalities from politics, business, science, media and society – in English. Angelika Dorawa, Head of TalentKolleg Ruhr Gelsenkirchen, emphasises the special role of this format: “Training in the basics of the English language is a core topic of our work. We are seeing a growing number of highly motivated young people coming to our courses to practise grammar, free speaking and listening comprehension. They were able to apply all of this today in conversation with Pauline Kao and were able to gain a lot of inspiration and motivation for their own educational path.”
Eda Kurnali and Türel Tan, who offer counselling and training at TalentKolleg Ruhr and jointly moderated the event, added: “Many talents also express the desire to spend time abroad. We have taken this on board and offer individual counselling sessions abroad, which have met with enormous interest. We will also be offering an autumn holiday academy on international career opportunities this year.”
The TalentKolleg Ruhr Gelsenkirchen at Westfälische Hochschule is funded by the Ministry of Schools and Education of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the City of Gelsenkirchen.
