Less than 100 days after their landing on D-Day, June 6, 1944, the Allied troops managed to advance from the French Atlantic coast, across occupied Western Europe, and all the way to the German border. On September 12, 1944, U.S. soldiers entered German soil for the first time in the town of Roetgen, and a few days later, Monschau became the first city in Germany to be liberated by American troops.
