About the book: Yes or No. Freedom to or freedom from. Positive freedom or negative freedom, as it is called in political science. A rift runs through American society along this conflict line. And it is getting deeper and deeper. The controversy now shapes the country at all levels. Freedom, after all, is the universal value of the United States, the cornerstone of the American experiment. No other value is so deeply rooted in the nation’s self-understanding. But what is understood by it varies widely. And when these opposing ideas collide, conflict often results. For whoever defines freedom defines America.
