The US influence on Black feminism in Germany
with Prof. Dr. Natasha A. Kelly, Visiting Professor of Cultural Studies and Philosophy at the Berlin University of the Arts
Thursday, February 22, 2024 | 6:30 pm
FORUM Adult Education Center at the Museum am Neumarkt
Cäcilienstraße 29-33 | 50667 Cologne
Following on from her latest book Black. German. Feminine. Why Feminism Must Demand More Than Gender Justice, Prof. Dr. Natasha A. Kelly builds a bridge across the Atlantic and discusses the connections between Black women’s movements in Germany and the US. What is the reality of life for Black women in both countries? To what extent has Black feminism been and continues to be shaped by US influences? Can the US and Germany learn from each other when it comes to combating intersectional discrimination? We will discuss these and other questions with Kelly.
Prof. Dr. Natasha A. Kelly is a communication scientist and sociologist, author, editor, curator, and multimedia artist with a focus on Black German history, Black feminism, and Afrofuturism. Dr. Kelly has taught and researched at numerous national and international universities and has been appointed Max Kade Visiting Professor of German Studies at the University of Rhodes Island (USA) and Visiting Professor of Media Studies at the University of Tübingen.
The event will be held in German. Following the discussion, we cordially invite you to a reception.
