Democracy and Controversy in the USA – Role Model or Warning for Germany?
Democracy needs dispute and constructive criticism. Only by negotiating differences does public debate become truly fruitful. At the same time, rules are needed to ensure productive democratic discourse. But how do we find the right balance in the face of growing polarization and daily rhetorical exacerbations? How do we fill democracy with life and agree on political content and social visions? These are particularly important now, as Germany has prescribed itself a “turn of the times” and the democracies of the West must reassure themselves of their values anew.
With journalist and political expert Dr. Leonard Novy, Tobias Endler, who published the book “Democracy and Controversy – The Discourse of Progressives in the U.S.: A Model for Germany?” from Halem Verlag in the fall, will discuss how public discourse is currently unfolding in the U.S. and what lessons can be learned for Germany. It points out where inspiration can lie for us, but it also warns about what happens when democratic discourse gets out of hand.
