Klangkosmos NRW 2024 with the Idumea Quartet (USA)

The Appalachian Mountains are a mountainous region in the eastern United States. Immigrants from England, the Scottish Lowlands, and Ulster settled in the Appalachians during the 17th and 18th centuries, bringing their musical traditions such as English ballads and Irish and Scottish fiddle tunes. One of the significant symbols of Appalachian culture is the banjo, introduced in the 18th century by African-American slaves. In the Appalachians, the various European influences intersected with African-American blues and church hymns, giving rise to a distinct and popular folk music.

The Idumea Quartet embodies a blend of tradition, experimentation, and humor, drawing inspiration from minimalism and experimental music. The traditional string quartet lineup explores the traditional repertoire with a chamber music aesthetic. The addition of harmonized vocals creates a truly unique and captivating sound experience.
