At a time when so much is at stake, when we have to ask ourselves where, when and with whom everything went wrong, how can we responsibly account for the past and still keep the future open for new possibilities?

Holly A. Case is Professor of European History at Brown University in Providence (USA) and currently a Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Mount Holyoke College, her PhD in History and Humanities from Stanford University, and has taught at Cornell University. Case is the author of numerous articles and essays on European history, literature, politics, and the history of ideas, which have appeared in The Guardian, Chronicle Review, Aeon, The Nation, Dissent, Times Literary Supplement, and Eurozine. Her work has been funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Imre Kertész Kolleg Jena and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, among others.

After her talk, Holly Case will engage in a conversation with Martin Schulze Wessel, Professor and Chair of Eastern and South Eastern European History at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich.

This English-language event will be simultaneously translated into German. It is part of the Joint Visiting Speaker Series of the AmerikaHaus NRW e.V., the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and the American Academy in Berlin.
