Events in the US election campaign have come thick and fast in recent weeks: on July 13, Donald Trump was assassinated at a campaign rally, which once again brought debates about security and political stability to the fore. Shortly afterwards, Trump appointed JD Vance as his running mate, which was met with mixed reactions from within his own ranks. After increasing pressure from his own party, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal and nominated Vice President Kamala Harris as his presidential candidate. Harris won the support of many leading Democrats and managed to raise 200 million US dollars for her campaign in just one week. Her endorsement as the official presidential candidate by the Democratic National Committee is considered a formality.
With Dr. Johannes Thimm, Prof. Dr. Sabine Sielke and US correspondent Johanna Roth, we will look at what impact the events of recent weeks will have on the US election in November. What opportunities does the nomination of Kamala Harris as presidential candidate offer to the Democratic Party? How will Trump and the Republicans react to the new opponent? What does the choice of running mate mean for the Republican and Democratic campaigns? We want to discuss these and many other questions with you and our experts.
