Roni Horn – Give Me Paradox or Give Me Death

The extensive solo exhibition “Give Me Paradox or Give Me Death” showcases the influential American artist Roni Horn, featuring over 100 works spanning from the beginnings of her artistic career to the present. Thematically, Horn’s oeuvre, which encompasses sculpture, photography, drawing, and artist books, revolves around identity, mutability, and restlessness.

As visitors navigate through the exhibition, they encounter previously unreleased drawings from the late 1970s and a selection of color pigment drawings created between 1983 and 2018. Highlighted photographic works include the groundbreaking piece “Still Water (The River Thames, for Example)” (1999), presenting a portrait of the Thames in Southern England in 15 photographs, “a.k.a.” (2008/2009), a series portraying the artist at various moments in her life, and “Portrait of an Image (with Isabelle Huppert)” (2005/2006), featuring photographs where the actress appears in different film roles.

The exhibition’s sculptural pieces include works from the series “When Dickinson Shut Her Eyes” (1993-2008), where Horn engages with poems by Emily Dickinson, “Gold Field” (1980/1994), composed of 99.99% gold leaf, and “Untitled (‘The tiniest piece of mirror is always the whole mirror’)” (2022), a ten-part work made of cast glass that reflects the surroundings.

An exhibition catalog with contributions from Yilmaz Dziewior, Zoë Lescaze, Andrew Maerkle, Isabel de Naverán, and Kerstin Stakemeier will be published.
