ASSIST American Secondary Schools for International Students and Teachers
Throughout the school year in the USA, ASSIST scholarship recipients serve as cultural ambassadors, actively engaging in classroom and extracurricular activities within the American school community.
Since 1969, ASSIST has placed 6,000 students from 52 nations in ASSIST partner schools. Among them: 897 scholarship recipients residing in NRW, who over the past 54 years have familiarized US-Americans with the diverse culture and numerous traditions of their homeland.
Why NRW and ASSIST?
This close relationship, which has existed for over 50 years, can be attributed, among other things, to the establishment of ASSIST’s first overseas representation in Cologne in 1972, as well as the founding of the “ASSIST Förderverein für den deutsch-amerikanischen Schüleraustausch e.V.” (ASSIST Support Association for German-American Student Exchange) in 1982, also in Cologne.
With three meetings per year held in Düsseldorf for candidates, scholarship recipients, families, and young alumni, the state of NRW continues to play a key role for the very latest “ASSIST generations.”
Beyond individual events and encounters, the partnership between NRW and ASSIST has a broader societal impact. The more than 1,350 students, alumni, parents, and nonprofit partner organizations from NRW in the ASSIST network form an active community united by shared values, dedicated to strengthening transatlantic relations.
