The North Atlantic Alliance is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. To date, 20 additional countries have joined the 12 founding states and their collective goal of standing up for democratic values and peace. They make NATO the defence bulwark of Europe and North America.

Examples of the alliance’s eventful and geopolitically challenging decades include the confrontation between the blocs after the end of the Second World War, the Kosovo War in the second half of the 20th century, the attacks of 11 September 2001 and the current Russian war of aggression in the Ukraine. In addition, NATO has had to adapt to increasingly interwoven global structures and ever more complex defence policy conditions. Technological progress and the ability to defend against hybrid threats from state and non-state actors require an increasingly broad and multi-layered organisation of the alliance.

Further information on the lecture series “75 Years of NATO” can be found here.
