As a relatively new university in North Rhine-Westphalia, TU Dortmund maintains a wide range of cooperative relationships with universities in the USA. Every year, around 40 students from TU Dortmund are able to spend time in the USA free of charge thanks to partnerships with nearly 30 institutions and membership in the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP). Scientists also participate in exchanges, and a large number of research collaborations exist.

TU Dortmund also collaborates with neighboring institutions through the University Alliance Ruhr, which operates a liaison office in New York City. This office helps to maintain ongoing exchange programs and academic relations, as well as open up new avenues for cooperation.

The NRW-USA Year gives TU Dortmund the opportunity to honor its long-standing good partnership with the USA. In this context, a number of events will be held in both Dortmund and New York to celebrate the NRW-USA connection.
